Faith Formation Begins This Sunday!

Sunday School: This week our Sunday School lesson is all about prayer and what a privilege it is to pray for one another! We’ll focus on the scripture lesson from our lectionary reading, 1 Timothy 2:1-7, which begins with the exhortation “First then, I urge that supplications, intercessions, prayers and thanksgiving be made for everyone…” We’ll enjoy a story, snack, craft, and of course, a special prayer.
Children in Kindergarten through sixth grade will be dismissed after the children’s message–but older children are welcome to join us as well! This week Pastor Erin will be teaching Sunday school. Are you interested in joining the Sunday School Team to help with future lessons? If so, please email .

Adult Education: For our Adult Education program , we’ll begin the series The Economy of Love: Creating a Culture of Enough, presented by Christian author and activist, Shane Claiborne. Each of our sessions will provide an opportunity for guided discussion centered on a short video clip on the theme. Everyone is welcome, so please feel free to join us and check it out!
Shane Claiborne describes the course in this way: America thrives on a simple message - That what we have is currently not enough. Not big enough, not nice enough, not fast or hip enough. The American Dream is based on wanting more. But does God's dream for the world look like the American Dream? In this multi-week study, unpack what the patterns of God's kingdom look like compared to the patterns of our world. What is the value of enough, and how do we become more like the God who is close to the poor, the hungry, the meek and the merciful?

BI/NK CROP Walk: This year’s CROP walk is taking place on Sunday, September 25th! NEXT WEEK!! Please consider joining this walk as a walker or as a sponsor for a walker, as we together work to make hunger history. Here is the link to register or support the Bethany team:  https://events.crophungerwalk.org/2022/event/bainbridgeislandwa.  Remember, all donations are matched by an island donor, so this provides a great opportunity to make a difference in fighting hunger locally and globally.

But wait, there’s more...the Mini-CROP Walk will take place at Bethany that same day, a half mile walk around the Bethany grounds with Pastor Erin and Pastor Paul right after worship on the 25th. this is for everyone in the church, and especially our children. A Bethany donor is pledging $50 for every child at Bethany who participates, an amount that will be matched (making it $100) with the larger walk. But, each person needs to sign up as a walker on the website indicated above in order for the $50 to be contributed. Contact Pastor Paul for any questions. Bethany youth will be setting up the walk route on BI, as has been our tradition for the past several years. Let’s work together to faithfully make hunger history.

A “Noisy” Offering: We will have a “noisy” offering next Sunday, September 25th. There will be a collection during Sunday morning worship to benefit the CROP Walk. Pastor Paul also invites families with children and those unable to participate in the CROP Walk, to plan on a walk after worship around the property. Come with noisy pockets - quarters, dimes, nickels, pennies. Change is good!

Opening Up the Nursery: After being closed for two and a half years because of the pandemic, the Bethany nursery is reopening! We plan to have the nursery staffed and ready for children aged four and younger beginning Sunday, October 2. We are looking for a couple more high school students and an adult to round out our nursery team. If you, or someone you know, are interested please contact Debbie at .

Upcoming Memorials: It was with sadness that we learned of the death of former Bethany choir director, Shirley Jenkins. Shirley died on August 18, following a battle with cancer. Her memorial service will be held Saturday, September 24, 2pm, at Vinland Lutheran Church in Poulsbo. There will be an opportunity to sing at Shirley’s memorial as part of a group now being formed. For details contact Jeff Sievertson at 360-621-1909. There will also be a memorial service for Bud Johnson, known at Bethany as the husband of Myrna Johnson.  Bud died during Covid, and Myrna moved to Vancouver (Camus), but it was always the plan to have Bud's memorial service at Bethany when the timing was right.  That time has been set for Saturday, October 1st at 11am at Bethany.  The service will be held in our fellowship hall, followed by a reception in the same space.

Rally Weekend: Plan now to attend worship on Sunday, September 11, as we celebrate the end of a beautiful Pacific Northwest summer, a new school year, a new program year and the beginning of Pastor Erin’s ministry as our Pastor for Faith Formation! Pastor Erin will be preaching at both the Saturday evening and Sunday morning services. Our Rally Sunday celebration will include a cookout, disc golf on the lawn, pickleball in the parking lot, and bicycle blackberry smoothies! Bethany will provide burgers, hot dogs, and chips. Everyone is invited to bring their favorite side dish or salad to share.

Blessing of the Backpacks: Calling all students! Bring your backpack to worship this coming Sunday, September 11, for a special blessing. Even if you forget your backpack, you can still come up during the children's message for a blessing on the new school year and a colorful tag that you can put on your backpack reminding you to: "Be Loved. Be Kind. Be You." Good advice for a great school year!

LWR School Kit Supplies Needed: Back-to-school supplies sales are already happening! Again this year Bethany people will make book bags to be filled and sent to school children around the world through Lutheran World Relief. We will fill and ship the book bags in October, for delivery in early November, when we also send quilts and baby kits. We’d love your help! Scan store sales ads for school supplies, purchase some of the items, and bring them to the labeled box in the narthex. Needed items include: 70-sheet spiral notebooks (wide- or college-ruled), 30-centimeter or inches/centimeter rulers; pencil sharpeners; blunt/safety scissors; unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers; black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink); boxes of 16 or 24 crayons; 2 and ½ inch erasers. More supply lists are also in the box. Office Depot/Office Max, Staples, Target, WalMart, Fred Meyer, Amazon, etc. may have what you want at good sale prices. Last year we shipped 81 school kits! With donations of supplies and book bags from many Bethanians, who knows? Maybe we’ll send 100 this fall!

Women’s Schola of Bainbridge Island: The Women’s Schola of Bainbridge Island will sing the Office of Evensong at 6 pm on Sunday, September 11, at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. Come hear traditional plainsong, anthems, psalms, and chants, and let the grace of sung prayer refresh you for the week to come.
