CROP Walk support goes through September

By Chris Christensen

Why is Pastor Paul walking from NK Fishline to Helpline House?  He's supporting the Bainbridge/North Kitsap CROP Hunger Walk!

During the month of September 2020 Bainbridge Island and North Kitsap faith communities and organizations are walking virtually together in our 24th annual Bainbridge Island/North Kitsap CROP Hunger Walk. You decide your route and activity while safely social distancing. We're asking everyone who can to help Bethany Lutheran Church reach these two goals:
1) more meals for the growing number of people who need them in our community
2) more food security around the world.

Monies raised go to Helpline and NK Fishline food banks (25 percent) and to Church World Service, an international relief organization that provides hunger relief, disaster assistance, animals and training to provide both food sources and saleable products, water and sanitary projects, and education opportunities around the world.  All three organizations are meeting increased need as well as adjusting their practices during the pandemic.

Every dollar raised in the Walk will be matched up to $20,000 -- with 25 percent of all funds raised going right to our local food banks, Helpline and Fishline.  There is a rumor that Bethany has their own matching donors.  If Bethany's donors and walkers raised $2,500 and that was matched by Bethany's matching donors, Bethany would raise $5,000.  That $5000 would be matched by an anonymous donor resulting in $10,000 raised for hunger relief - $2,000 of that would go to Helpline House's food bank program.

In these uncertain times, it feels great to be part of the solution. Helping meet the growing challenge for food security in our world and right here in our community.

Pastor walks from Poulsbo to Bainbridge to fight hunger

Pictured out front, Pastor Paul takes a selfie at the beginning of his walk in Poulsbo on Sept. 6. Pictured below, Helpline House, the pastor's destination.

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND – The Rev. Paul Stumme-Diers of Bethany Lutheran Church of Bainbridge Island walked from North Kitsap Fishline in Poulsbo to Helpline House on Bainbridge Island on Sunday, Sept. 6, to raise awareness about hunger.

The 60-year-old pastor’s trek covered 16 miles and took 6 1/2 hours, including stops at Martha and Mary and churches along the way.

His walk is in connection with the annual CROP Walk, being held virtually in many local communities during the entire month of September.

Maria Metzler, executive director of Helpline House, told Bethany Lutheran Church that the most-needed items include pop-top cans of soup and fruit, along with boxes of individually wrapped items such as granola bars, fruit crisps and goldfish crackers. Items can be taken to Helpline House at 282 Knechtel Way NE on Bainbridge Island, or to North Kitsap Fishline at 19689 7th Ave. NE, Poulsbo.

More about CROP Walk is at crophungerwalk.org.
