August 25 Announcements

Congregational Meeting, August 28th After Worship: Please stay after worship on Sunday, August 28th to vote on extending a call to Pastor Erin Grayson to the position of "Pastor for Faith Formation". Information about this position and call, approved by the Bethany Congregation council, has been sent to Bethany households via email and regular mail, but in short this is a half-time pastoral position that includes leadership for our Child and Family Ministry. It is “budget-neutral" and is coterminous with Pastor Paul's call to Bethany. Click  here to see Pastor Erin’s bio. We encourage anyone who attends the Saturday, August 27 service to come on Sunday, August 28th at 11am for the congregational meeting so we have a quorum.

Third Opportunity to Meet Pastor Erin: There will be one more "Meet and Greet" opportunity to get to know Pastor Erin this Saturday, August 27 after the 5pm service. Join us for fellowship and conversation.

Rally Sunday: Plan now to attend worship on Sunday, September 11, as we celebrate the end of a beautiful Pacific Northwest summer, a new school year, and a new program year. Our celebration will include a cookout and pickleball! Bethany will provide burgers, hot dogs, chips, and root beer floats. Everyone is invited to bring their favorite side dish or salad to share.

Bethany Choir Rehearsals Next Month: The Bethany Choir will hold its first fall rehearsal on Thursday, September 17 at 7pm in the education building. The following week and going forward, rehearsals will be on Wednesdays at 7pm in fellowship hall. All are welcome. Contact Sylvia Cauter with any questions.

Denny Young Funeral: A funeral service for Denny Young will be held at Grace Episcopal Church on Friday, August 26 at 3pm. Pastor Paul will be presiding at the service.

Sanctuary Project Update: The electrical work has been completed and the insulators will be here next week to blow in the insulation. The building will be closed August 29 – September 2 while the insulation work is being done. Staff will not be coming into the office next week but will be monitoring emails. There will be signage to make sure no one enters the building while insulation work is happening.

LWR School Kit Supplies Needed: Back-to-school supplies sales are already happening! Again this year Bethany people will make book bags to be filled and sent to school children around the world through Lutheran World Relief. We will fill and ship the book bags in October, for delivery in early November, when we also send quilts and baby kits. We’d love your help! Scan store sales ads for school supplies, purchase some of the items, and bring them to the labeled box in the narthex. Needed items include: 70-sheet spiral notebooks (wide- or college-ruled), 30-centimeter or inches/centimeter rulers; pencil sharpeners; blunt/safety scissors; unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers; black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink); boxes of 16 or 24 crayons; 2 and ½ inch erasers. More supply lists are also in the box. Office Depot/Office Max, Staples, Target, WalMart, Fred Meyer, Amazon, etc. may have what you want at good sale prices. Last year we shipped 81 school kits! With donations of supplies and book bags from many Bethanians, who knows? Maybe we’ll send 100 this fall!

Supporting Martha & Mary: A huge thank you to all who donated towards treats for the M and M staffers (nearly 400 strong) when they get regularly tested for Covid. The response from the Bethany community to this appeal was incredibly generous and the Martha & Mary staff is very grateful for the support. They now have an abundant supply of snacks for the month of September thanks to all of you!

Tamara Siburg Ordination: Tamara Siburg has been called to serve at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Clinton Iowa. She will be ordained and installed on Friday, September 9, 5pm CST. Bishop Amy Current of the Southeastern Iowa Synod will preach and preside. A live stream of the service can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCIPNZEdfsQn2JQ7SSwE4_A

Altar Flowers: The altar flowers this weekend are given by Luanne and Tom Croker in honor of their parents and grandparents.

Supporting Martha & Mary: At the last Martha and Mary Church and Community Committee meeting, it was decided that sponsoring churches would select a month to supply treats for the M and M staffers (nearly 400 strong) when they have to get regularly tested for Covid. (Currently, twice weekly.) The CEO says it’s a great morale booster for staff to know that people in churches are thinking about them. Bethany’s month is this September, and we will collect donations throughout the month of August. Treats/snacks must be individually commercially packaged; people can either donate actual snacks or contribute $$ for purchases. Ideas include granola bars, single serve bags of popcorn, nuts, chips, jerky sticks, fruit rollups, and/or individual beverage containers. Please put items in a basket provided in the fellowship hall; checks, made out to Bethany designating Martha & Mary in the memo line, should be placed in the offering plate, or given to Debbie in the Bethany office. Thank you for your generosity and for your support of these vital healthcare workers.

Join kickoff at 9am, or anytime throughout the day as riders return to cross the finish line, between 10:30 and 3pm. Come join the fun, bring the kids, and make some noise for the riders! Please email if you plan on joining for lunch. And it’s not too late to register to ride. Register for either the in-person ride (10 to 30 mile open course routes) OR for the virtual ride, which you can do on your own any day in August and still receive swag.
