Makin' hay while the sun shines

Day 2, Tuesday, and the roof workers will be back. Monday was a "Make Hay While the Sun Shines" day, with the roofers working from dawn until dusk to rip the old cedar shakes off the sanctuary roof.

Working without pause and only in T-shirts in frigid weather, the crew of several young men got about a third of the shingles removed. The shingles were tossed into a big truck parked by the oil tank.

If there is an optimal week for removing shingles in the dead of winter, this week might be it, with no rain expected until Sunday, with the exception of perhaps a little on Wednesday. Swing by and see the work. I'm going to put a photo gallery on the Bethany Facebook page. Check it out.

Crew arrives to replace the sanctuary roof

The roofers arrived at 8:30 a.m. Monday morning to begin tearing the aging and failing cedar shingles off the sanctuary roof. There's frost on the hard ground and on the roof, and the crew has special spiked footwear to do the job. It's cold out, too, about 36 degrees.

The staging area and trucks are parked outside the front door, to the left as you're looking at the entryway. You'll need to park elsewhere for a few days while they get this part of the job done.

Members of Bethany raise in excess of $30,000 to fund the new roof. It will be metal, to go with the roof that covers the fellowship hall, installed in 2009.

It looks relatively dry this week, except for a 40 percent chance of rain on Wednesday. Stop by and see the work.
